Inside Manu — the warm, eclectic space Miles and Katell have built

THE PEOPLE BEHIND IT

Miles and Katell

Manu is Miles and Katell's place. That is the simplest way to say it. Regulars thank them by name. First-timers leave knowing them by name. Guests drive past other cafés to get here.

They built something that feels genuinely local and genuinely welcoming at the same time. Local arts and crafts on the walls, friendly dogs outside, a working cabinet of things they have made themselves. The space is eclectic because the people running it are interested in things.

What they have created is a meeting place for everyone passing through Hokianga. Come in as a stranger and leave as a regular.

Omapere, Northland

Manu sits on State Highway 12, moments from the Hokianga Harbour, with Waipoua Forest and Tane Mahuta around the corner. The building is a converted garage. The views are extraordinary.

A warm community hub that surprises and stays in the memory long after

My most favourite meeting and eating place. Coffee, all-in breakfast, baked cheesecake. The team here is the best.

Harriet, Regular

A hidden gem with great staff and food that is genuinely the best breakfast I have ever had.
